故事講述未來世界遭遇嚴重汙染，人口出生率驟降，美國部分地區經曆血腥革命後建立了男性極權社會Gilead，當權者實行一夫多妻製，女性被當做國有財產，有生育能力的女性稱為“女仆”，被迫作為統治階級的生育工具，女主角Offred就是其中之一，她周旋於統治者、統治者凶殘的“妻子”、為統治者打理家務的年長女人“Martha”之間，想在活下去的同時找到自己被奪走的女兒。
